NIH BRAIN Initiative launches projects to develop innovative technologies to map the brain in incredible detail
In the human brain, 86 billion neurons form more than 100 trillion connections with other neurons at junctions called synapses. Scientists are now working on an ambitious effort to develop technologies to map these connections across the brain, from mice to humans.

The National Institutes of Health announced today its first wave of investments totaling $46 million in fiscal year 14 funds to support the goals of the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative.

The White House BRAIN Conference will announce progress since April 2013 when the President first announced this ambitious effort. It will also highlight new commitments and investments by the Federal government, private sector companies, universities, and non-profit organizations in response to the President’s call to action.

Drs. Cori Bargmann and Bill Newsome, co-chairs of the NIH BRAIN working group, present the working group’s multi-year, scientific vision to the NIH Director’s Advisory Committee on June 5.
