From the BRAIN Initiative Alliance: A look back on the BRAIN Initiative in 2023 (and what’s coming in 2024!)

The BRAIN Initiative Alliance (BIA) provided a recap of 2023 achievements by BRAIN Initiative investigators and partners and a look ahead to upcoming events and opportunities to look out for in 2024.

The BRAIN Initiative had a big year in 2023, with many partnerships, events, developments, and accomplishments. Check out the end-of-year recap to learn more about the latest research and advancements from the BRAIN Initiative and a first look at what’s to come in 2024.

BRAIN Initiative investigators made significant strides in human neuroscience research, including advances in the use of psychedelic drugs to treat depression, spinal cord stimulation to improve range of motion and strength in the arm and hand after paralysis, brain biomarkers associated with chronic pain, deep brain stimulation for stroke recovery and treatment-resistant depression, and musical brain activity.

Other exciting scientific accomplishments included the first complete insect brain wiring map, first map of an animal’s early visual system, and use of phase shift measurements to measure animal force and movement.

In addition to these impactful scientific breakthroughs, the BIA announced several initiatives and programs for the scientific community, including: the Dana Foundation’s Career Network in Neuroscience & Society, Simons Foundation’s Shenoy Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Neuroscience (SURFiN), National Institutes of Health’s BRAIN Initiative Connectivity Across Scales (BRAIN CONNECTS), Food and Drug Administration joining the Total Product Life Cycle Advisory Program (TAP), the National Science Foundation’s Biocomputing through EnGINeering Organoid Intelligence (BEGIN OI), and The Kavli Foundation’s support of the Essential Open Source Software for Science.

Check out all the exciting BRAIN Initiative highlights in the end-of-year recap, including a summary of the Congressional Neuroscience Caucus Briefing in June 2023, organized by the American Brain Coalition. Thank you to all BRAIN Initiative investigators, trainees, collaborators, supporters, and enthusiasts for making all of this possible in 2023! We cannot wait to see what we accomplish together in 2024!
