The BRAIN Initiative Alliance’s end-of-year recap summarizes achievements from the past year and provides a first glimpse into what’s planned for 2025.

The NIH BRAIN Initiative and its partners continue to play a leading role in neuroscience funding, outreach, and education, in part through the BRAIN Initiative Alliance (BIA). During Brain Awareness Week–the global campaign to foster public enthusiasm and support for brain science, established and coordinated by the Dana Foundation–the BIA is pleased to share incredible 2024 milestones in its annual end-of-year recap. You can also get a sneak peek at what to expect in 2025.

Some major scientific highlights for BRAIN Initiative investigators include the highest resolution three-dimensional map of human brain tissue ever created, a brain-computer interface that can convert brain waves into speech with minimal training, a promising new technological approach to treat Parkinson’s disease, and new insights into brain cell damage in Alzheimer’s disease. The BRAIN Initiative also made key contributions to basic science research, including a new gene delivery method bringing us closer to non-invasive treatments for brain conditions, novel insights into how blood flows in the brain, and a complete wiring map of an adult fruit fly's brain.

In addition to these groundbreaking scientific discoveries, the BIA shared new tools and resources for the scientific community; explored neuroscience and society through new initiatives, events, essays, and video series; offered exciting fellowships and funding opportunities; and celebrated a decade of innovation through activities like the 10th annual BRAIN Initiative Conference. In 2025, there are exciting opportunities for continued collaboration and outreach in groundbreaking neuroscience research.
