This week, a series of daily blog posts will highlight 28 new and reissued BRAIN Initiative notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs) for 2020. Today’s post highlights four awards that support the use of integrative, novel methods to elucidate neural circuits. The goal of these NOFOs is to enhance our understanding of neural circuitry by funding individual and collaborative brain circuit projects.

The NOFOs featured below aim to advance our understanding of the neural circuit basis of perception, emotion, cognition, and behavior by using cutting-edge technologies. The awards range from small, targeted brain circuit projects with specific research outcomes (R34, R01) to large, team-research projects with extensive long-term goals (U19). All proposed projects should use innovative tools to examine the neural circuitry of cognitive processes, such as sensation, perception, emotion, decision-making, and/or navigation. The use of multiple species, ranging from humans to other mammals and invertebrates, is encouraged.

RFA-NS-18-014 Targeted BRAIN Circuits Planning Projects – TargetedBCPP (Reissue of RFA-NS-17-015; R34)

This NOFO solicits applications designed to establish feasibility, validity, or other technical results that would lay the foundation for a potential subsequent Targeted BRAIN Circuits Projects – TargetedBCP R01, as described in the companion NOFO below (RFA-NS-18-030). Applications should include exploratory research projects that use methodologically-integrated approaches to study the neural circuitry of cognition and behavior. Applications are due on July 1, 2020 and November 10, 2020.

RFA-NS-18-030 Targeted BRAIN Circuits Projects – TargetedBCP (Reissue of RFA-NS-18-009; R01)

This NOFO supports projects that use innovative approaches to understand how neural circuit activity gives rise to cognition and behavior, as detailed above. Proposed experiments should address questions of fundamental neurobiology and identify, record, and/or manipulate neural circuits involved in behavior. The goal is to fund projects that can significantly advance our knowledge of circuit function within five years. The application receipt dates are July 1, 2020 and November 10, 2020.

RFA-NS-19-002 Team-Research BRAIN Circuit Programs – TeamBCP (U19 Clinical Trial Required); RFA-NS-19-003 (U19 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (Reissue of RFA-NS-17-018)

This pair of NOFOs support interdisciplinary research teams working together on projects that employ advanced and innovative technologies to study the neural circuitry of cognition and behavior. These NOFOs solicit programs with a team-science approach that can greatly advance our understanding of circuit function within 5-plus years with a possibility of one renewal. The application receipt date for both awards is October 30, 2020.
