This funding opportunity will support fundamental research to accelerate breakthroughs in support of the Biopreparedness Research Virtual Environment (BRaVE) Initiative. Applications are due May 9, 2023.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking proposals from multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional teams led by DOE national laboratories to support national biopreparedness and response capabilities. In 2020, the DOE established the National Virtual Biotechnology Laboratory (NVBL) to share resources, capabilities, and expertise across the DOE’s 17 national laboratories. The Biopreparedness Research Virtual Environment (BRaVE) Initiative will build on the highly successful framework established by the NVBL and broaden its capabilities to provide new innovations. Planned funding will be $35 million a year for three years with a total planned investment of $105 million. The funding anticipated for each award is $2-4 million per year.

Any BRaVE proposal submitted in response to this solicitation must address the following focus areas:

  1. Decipher host-pathogen dynamics in real time for new mitigation strategies

  1. Reveal molecular interactions across biological scales for design of targeted interventions

  1. Elucidate multiscale ecosystem complexities for robust epidemiological modeling

  1. Realize understanding to accelerate design, discovery, and manufacturing of materials

  1. Advance innovations in user facility instrumentation, experimental techniques, and data analytics

Achieving these research objectives would revolutionize our understanding of the science underlying a range of potential biological events. The DOE solicitation recognizes the potential relevance to NIH research and leveraging collaborations is encouraged.

The experimental and computational innovations developed as part of this research are highly relevant to the BRAIN Community. While applications are only open to researchers at the DOE national laboratories, partnerships with scientists at other institutions--including those funded by the BRAIN Initiative-- are strongly encouraged. For more information, please view the program solicitation. Preliminary proposals are due February 28, 2023. If invited, a full proposal will be due by May 9, 2023
