Letters of Agreement pave way for collaboration between NIH BRAIN Initiative and neuroscientists in Canada and Australia.

The 10 NIH Institutes that are part of the NIH BRAIN InitiativeSM recently announced two new partnerships, formalized by letters of agreement, with the Brain Canada Foundation (Brain Canada) and the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to support the involvement of Canadian and Australian researchers, respectively, in the NIH BRAIN Initiative.

Brain Canada will seek partners and provide grant support for Canadian researchers through the Canada Brain Research Fund that provides a 1:1 match of funds raised from other sources. Canadian researchers who are interested in participating in awards funded by the NIH BRAIN Initiative can contact the Program Director/Principal Investigator of the NIH award to inquire if there is mutual interest in collaboration. If there is interest, the Canadian researcher can apply directly to Brain Canada for funding for the work to be performed in Canada.

Through the NHMRC, Australian neuroscientists will be invited to collaborate on BRAIN projects related to non-invasive human brain imaging and neurological recording techniques that bridge neural activity across scales—from single neurons to neural circuits to the whole brain. Details about NHMRC application procedures, funding rules, and eligibility requirements will be available on the NHMRC website.

In addition to providing funds, representatives of Brain Canada and NHMRC will join those of the National Science Foundation, the Food and Drug Administration, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, and the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency in meetings of the BRAIN Multi-Council Working Group.
