This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) encourages applications for administrative supplements for research and capacity building efforts related to bioethical issues. Applications are due by February 17, 2023.
Ethical considerations play an important role in biomedical and health-related research by ensuring that the ethical and societal implications of scientific discoveries are translated into practice. Research on bioethical issues can provide guidance on how to conduct research and how to apply new technologies and policies in a responsible way. As science and society evolve, it's even more important to study bioethical issues. The NIH is committed to supporting research that meets the highest ethical standards and includes bioethics in many areas of research that align with the missions of NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices.
In line with this commitment, the NIH Office of Science Policy within the Office of the Director (OD) has recently issued a Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) NOT-OD-23-018 to announce the availability of administrative supplements to support capacity building efforts related to bioethical issues.
OD is particularly interested in applications that identify, analyze, and/or address bioethical issues related to digital health and/or real-world data; participant engagement; return of research results for individuals, families, communities, and/or society; and data sharing. These efforts align with various BRAIN Initiative activities regarding neuroethics, including use and access to neurotechnologies and their relationships to informed consent, cultural differences, treatment/access barriers, and data ownership, access, and privacy related to human neural data collection.
OD also seeks to fund research on additional bioethics topics. Applications should propose 1) research on topics that support the development of an evidence base that may inform future policy directions, and/or 2) projects that support certain efforts to develop or augment bioethics research capacity.
