This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) encourages BRAIN Initiative research targeting interoceptive processes and circuits. The next application deadline is June 15, 2023.

The BRAIN Initiative aims to revolutionize neuroscience by developing and applying innovative technologies to map neural circuits, monitor and modulate their activity, and understand how they contribute to thoughts, sensations, emotions, and behaviors. Recently, the NIH announced a new research effort focused on interoception, or the ways in which organisms sense and regulate signals within their bodies.

The NIH encourages BRAIN Initiative applications targeting interoceptive processes and circuits through the Notice of Special Interest (NOSI; NOT-AT-23-003) BRAIN Initiative: Notice of Support for Research on Interoception Circuits.

The next application deadline is June 15, 2023. Please submit applications using one of the following notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs):

For more details, please read the full notice (NOT-AT-23-003).

Interested in learning more about interoception? The first annual NIH Investigator Meeting on Functional Neurocircuits of Interoception was held in September 2022. This virtual meeting featured seven studies funded by the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research: Functional Neurocircuits of Interoception, the NIH BRAIN Initiative, the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award (PA) Program, as well as studies on interoception funded by the NOSI: Promoting Research on Interoception and Its Impact on Health and Disease. Please visit the event webpage for the full meeting agenda and details. This meeting was recorded and is available to view through NIH Videocast
