This week we will highlight BRAIN Initiative notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs) for fiscal year 2023. Today’s post features data analysis and technology dissemination and commercialization.

Data Science and Standardization

RFA-MH-22-220 Integration and Analysis of BRAIN Initiative Data (Reissue of RFA-MH-21-135; R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

This NOFO supports research to develop informatics tools for analyzing, visualizing, and integrating data related to the BRAIN Initiative to enhance our understanding of the brain. Example activities may include modifying existing analysis and visualization tools for BRAIN Initiative data or proposing new tools to analyze BRAIN Initiative data. The tools supported under this NOFO will make use of relevant data standards and will be integrated into data repositories. Please read the full NOFO for more details. Applications are due June 9, 2023 and October 13, 2023.

RFA-MH-22-145 Standards to Define Experiments Related to the BRAIN Initiative (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

This NOFO aims to develop standards that describe experimental protocols conducted as part of the BRAIN Initiative. This is part of the program to build the informatics infrastructure of the BRAIN Initiative. The first step of standard development will involve sharing data between different groups in the experimental community. The developed standards will be broadly disseminated for use and widely available. Please read the full NOFO for more information. Applications are due June 14, 2023.

RFA-MH-20-600 Data Archives for the BRAIN Initiative (Reissue of RFA-MH-19-145; R24)

The purpose of this NOFO is to develop web-accessible data archives to capture, store, and curate data related to the BRAIN Initiative. The data archives teams will develop tools, using appropriate standards, that allow users to analyze and visualize data. The goal of this program is to advance research by creating a community resource data archive with appropriate standards and summary information that is broadly available and accessible to the research community. Please read the full NOFO for more details. Applications are due July 14, 2023.

NOT-MH-19-010 Notice of Data Sharing Policy for the BRAIN Initiative

The purpose of this notice is to inform prospective applicants and current awardees of a new policy that expects applicants to BRAIN Initiative NOFOs to do the following: 1) submit their data to one of the BRAIN data archives for sharing; 2) include specific required elements in the Resource Sharing Plan; and 3) include costs attributed to data preparation and submission to a data archive in grant applications. For more information, please read the full notice.

Dissemination and Commercialization

RFA-NS-22-011 Research Resource Grants for Technology Integration and Dissemination (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The purpose of this NOFO is to disseminate resources for integration into neuroscience research practice. The resources should address compelling needs of neuroscience researchers that are otherwise unavailable or impractical in their current form. Activities must include dissemination of an existing resource. Example activities include: distribution of tools and reagents; user training on new technologies; providing access to technology platforms or facilities; improvements to resource production; adaptations to meet the needs of a user community. Please read the full NOFO for more information. Applications are due June 14, 2023.

NOT-NS-21-014 Availability of Administrative Supplements for BRAIN Initiative Awardees to Support Resource Dissemination

This notice announces the availability of administrative supplements to support dissemination of promising technologies and resources generated from BRAIN Initiative awards to foster collaborations between innovators and new end-user laboratories, and ultimately integrate such innovations into neuroscience research practice. The goal of this notice is to accelerate the scientific impact of the BRAIN Initiative through rapid dissemination of resources and technologies to the neuroscience research community. Please read the full notice for more information.

NOT-MH-21-125 Translation of BRAIN Initiative Technologies to the Marketplace (SBIR/STTR)

This notice encourages the translation of BRAIN-supported technologies from the bench to the marketplace. Applicants are encouraged to submit Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant applications to develop, optimize, validate, and scale technologies for commercial dissemination. Please read the full notice for more information. Applications are due January 5, 2023 and April 5, 2023.

As part of the NIH BRAIN Initiative’s efforts to promote more impactful science through the inclusion of diverse perspectives, these FOAS will require a Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP) as part of the application.

Please visit the BRAIN Initiative’s Funding Opportunities webpage for more details on these and any additional opportunities that may arise.
