In response to the BRAIN Initiative, UC Davis awards $1 million in grants to seed innovative brain research.

The University of California at Davis has recently launched the BRAIN-STIM Grand Challenge Initiative to harness its researchers’ expertise in brain science towards the type of high-risk, high-impact projects supported by the BRAIN Initiative. The university has funded five interdisciplinary research teams

to develop preliminary data in support of future BRAIN Initiative grant applications. Each team will receive $200,000 over a two-year period. The funded projects include: a census of ganglion cell types in the retina; the generation of maps of brain function, neural connectivity and neural networks; and an investigation into the triggers of the neurodegenerative disorder fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome.
