Please join us online for exciting BRAIN-relevant events at the annual Society for Neuroscience meeting occurring virtually November 8-11, 2021.
The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) will be hosting a virtual conference this year on November 8-11, 2021, celebrating its 50th annual meeting. As always, there are several exciting BRAIN Initiative happenings slated to occur at the conference.
On Tuesday, November 9 at 2:30 pm ET, Dr. Eve Marder, the Victor and Gwendolyn Beinfield Professor of Biology at Brandeis University, National Academy of Sciences Member, and current BRAIN Multi-Council Working Group (MCWG) member, will give a lecture titled “From the Neuroscience of Individual Variability to Climate Change.” Dr. Marder’s lecture will draw fundamental lessons from basic neuroscience research examining the stability of microcircuits of crustaceans in response to changing temperatures. These studies may inform the role of individual variability in resilience to environmental changes or why identical pharmacological compounds can have drastically different effects on different individuals.
Be sure to also tune in for a poster presentation on the same day at 9:30 am ET from Dr. Ryan Richardson, current AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the Office of the BRAIN Director within the National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke. Dr. Richardson will discuss a new BRAIN Initiative effort, the Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives, that aims to bolster scientific achievement competitiveness through enhanced diversity and inclusivity.
On Wednesday, November 10, at 10:00 am ET, Dr. Vanessa Ruta, the Gabrielle H. Reem and Herbert J. Kayden Associate Professor, recently named Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, and BRAIN-funded investigator, will give a special lecture titled “Themes and Variations: Circuit Mechanisms of Behavioral Evolution.” Dr. Ruta will describe how comparing neural circuits in related species can reveal how circuit changes fuel behavioral evolution.
At 12:00 pm ET the same day, Dr. Christopher A. Walsh, the Bullard Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at Harvard Medical School, an HHMI Investigator, and current MCWG member, will give a lecture titled “Genetic Architecture of the Human Cerebral Cortex.” Dr. Walsh’s lecture will weave together how advances in gene mapping and sequencing are paving the way to our understanding of the evolutionary and developmental mechanisms that construct our human brain.
