Videocast will be available for the open sessions of the upcoming NIH BRAIN Initiative Neuroethics Working Group on Thursday, January 30, 2020 and the Multi-Council Working Group on Friday, January 31, 2020.
On Thursday, January 30, 2020, the Neuroethics Working Group (NEWG) to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative® will be holding its ninth meeting. The NEWG helps ensure that neuroethics is fully integrated into the BRAIN Initiative. The January meeting will feature presentations from Dr. Jennifer Collinge (University of Pittsburgh), Dr. Jonathan Kimmelman (McGill University), and Dr. Carlos Pena (Food and Drug Administration (FDA)). Following these presentations, there will be a group discussion on first in human studies with neurotechnology.

The following day, on Friday, January 31, 2020, the NIH BRAIN Initiative Multi-Council Working Group (MCWG) will convene to discuss the current state of the BRAIN Initiative and its future. The group includes representatives from each of the 10 Institutes and Centers that contribute to the NIH BRAIN Initiative (who may also serve as a liaison to an Advisory Council), with additional at-large members appointed to supplement the working group’s expertise. In addition, the working group includes ex officio members from DARPA, FDA, IARPA, and NSF — who comprise NIH’s federal partners involved in the BRAIN Initiative. The January meeting will feature updates on BRAIN Initiative programs at IARPA from Dr. David Markowitz, as well as presentations from Dr. Chris Fall (Director of the Office of Science at the Department of Energy) and Dr. David Holtzman (Washington University of St. Louis; MCWG member). NIH program staff will also provide a BRAIN portfolio presentation on large-scale recording and modulation in the nervous system, including public-private partnerships.

Both meetings will introduce Dr. John Ngai as BRAIN Director Designee, and include discussion with the groups on NIH implementation following the efforts of the Advisory Council to the Director (ACD) BRAIN Initiative 2.0 Working Group and BRAIN Neuroethics Subgroup.
