Neuroethics Working Group Meeting – Tuesday, August 23, 2022
On Tuesday, the Neuroethics Working Group (NEWG) will hold its fourteenth meeting. Input from the NEWG helps to ensure that neuroethics is fully integrated into the BRAIN Initiative. First, Dr. John Ngai, NIH BRAIN Initiative Director, will update the group on the current state of the Initiative. The meeting will feature a NEWG New Member Presentation by Dr. Caroline Montojo, President and CEO of the Dana Foundation. Then, Dr. Saskia Hendriks, Neuroethics Consultant at the Neuroethics Program of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and faculty member of the Department of Bioethics at the NIH Clinical Center, will present a portfolio analysis of emerging ethics themes in BRAIN awards from Fiscal Year 2021. Dr. Nina Hsu, Health Science Policy Analyst at NINDS and Science Committee Specialist for NEWG, will also provide a recap of the NEWG workshop on continuing trial responsibilities. Multi-Council Working Group Meeting – Wednesday, August 24, 2022
On Wednesday, the Multi-Council Working Group (MCWG) will hold its twenty-third meeting to discuss the current state of BRAIN. Dr. Ngai will provide the group with updates along with the newest BRAIN-funded research. Dr. Samantha White, Chief of the NINDS Scientific and Public Engagement Branch, will summarize the 8th Annual BRAIN Initiative Meeting, which was held virtually in June. Dr. Hank Greely, Deane F. and Kate Edelman Johnson Professor of Law, and Professor by courtesy of Genetics, at Stanford University, will provide a NEWG update. Dr. Tirin Moore, Professor of Neurobiology at Stanford University, is a newer MCWG member, representing the National Eye Institute, and will present a scientific talk on his research involving neural mechanisms of visual-motor integration and the neural basis of cognition (e.g. attention).
