This week, a series of daily blog posts will highlight 28 new and reissued BRAIN Initiative notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs) for 2020. Today’s post highlights four awards that support neural recording, modulation, and stimulation in animals and humans. These NOFOs promote the development, improvement, and understanding of novel methods for large-scale monitoring and manipulation of neural activity.

These awards encourage researchers to harness the power of next-generation invasive neural devices, neuroimaging methods, and neuromodulation techniques to advance our knowledge about the brain and brain disorders.

Human Neuroscience and Clinical Studies

Does your research involve bioethics? If so, you may want to consider the new bioethics funding supplements. These administrative supplements can support BRAIN-funded scientists conducting neuroethics research or those who seek to integrate bioethics into their projects. Applications are due on March 20, 2020.

The next application deadline for the BRAIN Initiative: Exploratory Team-Research BRAIN Circuit Programs – eTeamBCP (U01 Clinical Trials Optional) is July 14, 2020.

NIH is devoting significant resources to COVID-19, including funding opportunities through Notices of Special Interest (NOSI) in which BRAIN grantees may be interested

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, NIH has revised its page on Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to align with implementation of recent guidance from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for recipients affected by COVID-19.

These three BRAIN Initiative funding opportunities span from developing new theories and computational models, to creating tools for gene editing in marmosets and next generation human brain imaging. Application due dates are coming up in September and October.

RFA-EB-20-001 Proof of Concept Development of Early Stage Next Generation Human Brain Imaging (U01; Reissue of RFA-EB-19-001)

This notice of funding opportunity supports the development of technologies, production efforts, and dissemination resources for a cell type-specific armamentarium to study brain function across species. Applications are due in February and October of 2021.

RFA-MH-20-556 Pilot resources for brain cell type-specific access and manipulation across vertebrate species (U01; clinical trial not allowed)

This F32 notice of funding opportunity supports research training of promising post-doctorates, early in their postdoctoral training period. The next deadlines for applications are in December 2020 and August 2021. NIH staff also recently recognized postdoctoral fellows for their efforts during National Postdoc Appreciation Week.

NIH will be providing up to a two-receipt cycle of eligibility for prospective applicants to the BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00) through the February/March 2021 due dates.
